Look Inside 2012

Hello All,

I'm excited about 2012. Well, I'm excited every day that I wake up in my right mind...it's another opportunity to get it right! I have the distinct pleasure of turning 50 this year. I can't remember ever being in a better place in my life! That being said, I would like to pass along these guidelines that help me in my journey to live my best life.

My Look Inside Guide:

1) Not only will I be looking inside my closet for garments to wear but I will be looking inside myself and taking a more natural  to approach on what I decide to wear. Not just adhering to what retailers suggest but more knowing what looks and feels good to me taking in account my body type, skin color and level of comfort.

2) Keeping myself in a good state of mind...whatever the situation! Lots of self help reading and learning from past experiences good and bad.

3) As I get older, it becomes more  important to me to celebrate my age rather than conceal it. By choosing age appropriate clothing and focusing on my health I continue to look fabulous at any age-if I do say so myself. Eating a healthy diet, drinking lots of water, continuing my long walks and biking help me achieve this goal.

4)  I moved from a 1700 sq. ft. loft in DC to a 350 sq. ft. flat in NYC...that being said there is very little closet space. Therefore I will only purchase garments that truly speak to me! Verses a trendy idem that will take up valuable space in my closet unworn for seasons to come.

5) Lastly, I surround myself with the things and people the make me happy. I'm fortunate to work from home...where I have my  photos of family members and dear friends as well as my books. The sound of jazz fills my flat like Bricktop's in 1920's Paris.

For 2012, I'm looking inside and I love what I see!

SPRING & SUMMER MAKEOVER TIPS

Makeovers:

I don't believe makeovers have to be completed in one day.  I'm of the opinion that when you want to change your look it should be taken in steps.  Here are some tips to remain comfortable in your skin yet display a fabulous new look over a period of time.  You can do something wonderful for yourself each month. By the end of the summer your makeover will be complete.

1.) Start with your inner self, how do I feel about myself?  Why do I think I need or want a makeover?   Once you have answered these questions start with the outer.  Are there any skin or teeth issues?   Do I want to lose weight? Once this is complete onto the next step.

2.) Start with a  new hair style, if your hair is curly change to wearing it straight or from long to short.

3.) Next go into your closet and look at your spring & summer wardrobe. Before you dash out and buy all new clothes see what you have already.  Let's say you have a favorite tan or white linen suit that you've worn 2-3 seasons already; just retool it by taking the pants or skirt with you shopping, match it with a new bold multi colored chiffon blouse or a pale coral rose cotton sweater . If it's a long skirt have it shorten or pants have them tailored to walking shorts.

4.) After you have sorted out what you will be wearing this season, organize your closet. Your work  dress & casual clothes should each have it's own section in your closet.  You will be amazed at how wonderful  you feel when you know where all of your garments are when you're ready to get dressed!

5.) REMEMBER STYLE IS MORE THAN JUST YOUR CLOTHING...

STYLE ICON EDITH HEAD

When I think of  style I think of FASHION ICON-DESIGNER Edith Head.  She was an american costume designer who had a long career in hollywood.  I loved her work with Audrey Hepburn for the movie"Roman Holiday"...during her long career she garnered 8 academy awards from 1948 until 1966 more than any other woman in history.  Ms. Head was able to connect the movie script with the actor which produced a timeless creation. Edith Head's design's were work's of art- not just clothing to cover your body- they added a feeling of glamor and confidence. I fondly remember seeing pictures of  her in those trademark tented eyeglasses. How wonderful to see a resurgence of old hollywood on the runway. Let's all ESCAPE TO STYLE....

FINDING ONE'S OWN VOICE

What a great feeling when you find your own voice!  I felt going into 2011 that I had finally found what
I really wanted to do in life...I'd always heard from others that you would truly know what your passion was when you were willing to do it for "free"...It's been a long road trying to find out what that might be!  I never knew or didn't have the confidence to know what I was good at doing so I could provide for myself.   Never thought  my life's experience would be the very thing that would be my voice.   I'm able now to freely give to other's what I've found to be true.  The book I wrote which at first was only suppose to be about fashion ended up becoming my voice. I'm overjoyed when I'm able to connect with  friends I've known for years or people I meet for the first time while talking about "On the Other Side of STYLE"  or my nonprofit "Journey Inc".  My Dreams=My Journey=My Voice=FREEDOM!

"Style" Not just about how you dress...

I'm a great believer that style isn't just about how you dress. Baby it's so much more than that...for me It started with having to overcome "fear"...from and early age I knew there was something different about how I saw the world, and what I thought about clothes and how I thought they should be wore-not always conforming to what a magazine or sales person said or suggested.  Now knowing and feeling that was not enough to combat a large giant called "fear"!  I allowed my mind to take me to stylish places but not my actions all the time-meaning I went with what was the norm in fashion and let my personality do the rest...That ladies & gentleman was something I had no control over!  As I grew older I hungered for a more personal sense of style... I was able to connect with men & women who thought as I did... after spending time with them I would re-entered  into a world that seemed committed to destroying what we all thought about personal style...my way of dealing with this issue was drugs and alcohol...not suggested! Please don't wait as long as I did to address your fear... or take your "LIFE" thinking it's not going to get any better...I'm LIVING proof that it does get a whole lot better!!!

Love and Kisses,
George

Welcome

I want to welcome you to my first blog...I'm grateful for the growing success of my new book "On the Other Side of Style". While writing the book I got a chance to reflect on who is "George Worrell" ...I never wanted to define myself- I left that to others to tell me...did I love and except myself ? NO... After seeing and being told for 30 years that who I was attracted too and everything that went with it was WRONG...I thought "HUH"  so let me understand this...It's ok for me to do your hair, decorate your house or fellowship hall, pick out your clothes, earrings, loan you money when your live-in man didn't give you his share of the rent because he just purchased a new car that you can't drive or ride-in- so you calling me for a loan...but don't go around your son to much because he may start acting like me!  "Huh"  Somthing's wrong with that thinking baby!!! I want to add going through this and more... I never thought about taking my "life"It's called your "journey children"...stay on it and live it does get better!!!  I've not had a drink or drug in over 15years-but it was'nt until I completed my book that it all came together for me...I will not allow anyone else to define me...It's now clear to me...I love myself!
Love and Kisses,

On the Other Side of Style

"My message is a simple yet important one: True style starts from within. It's really not about the designer dress or suit. It's about how you feel about you. Then and only then can you place the focus on your outer self. I have a story to tell and now it's time to tell it."
